Narrative Report: Dr. Gallico has been a member of the surgical staff at the MGH for twenty years. His major contributions have been in clinical studies and laboratory and clinical research, especially in the areas of Immunologic Enhancement, Microsurgery and Limb Replantation, Cultured Epithelial Grafts for Burn Wound Closure, and Manual and Computer Graphics in Plastic Surgery. He teaches medical students daily in clinical plastic surgery at the MGH and lectured on Hand Anatomy in the Surgical Anatomy Course at HMS for many years. He teaches surgical residents everyday in the course of his and their clinical cases in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the MGH. He is a consultant twice a month at the resident’s cosmetic clinic. In addition, he has, since 1986, run a two year-long course for the Plastic and General Surgery residents on Drawing in a Surgical Practice (manual and computer graphics as applied to surgery). Dr. Gallico continues as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts to develop art techniques and applications to Plastic Surgery. His figurative and portrait work has been exhibited in several venues. His photography of surgery received an award at the Ernst Haas contest. He is a member of the Portrait Society of America. Dr. Gallico also participates in and presents at the MGH and the HMS Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds every week. He also regularly presents at the Grand Rounds of other departments at the MGH, e.g. Dermatology, Gynecology, Oral Surgery, etc. He is also frequently invited to speak at national meetings. He has authored the definitive chapter on Limb Replantation. He is recognized as an authority on Skin Substitutes for Wound Closure and was invited most recently to speak at a national symposium in La Jolla, CA. He speaks annually at a plastic surgery symposium on Techniques in Rhinoplasty, Computer Graphics, Breast Volume, and Skin Surface Analysis. Dr. Gallico has also developed strong international relationships and is invited to speak at national meetings abroad. Most recently he was invited to lecture on Breast Surgery at the Annual Meeting of the Turkish Society of Plastic Surgeons in Izmir, Turkey and to design, organize, and moderate a full symposium on Plastic Surgery at the Pan Pacific Surgical Society’s Biennial Meeting in Honolulu, HA. He was invited to speak on computer graphics and the volume of Breast Reduction at the Italian Plastic Surgeon’s Annual Meeting in 2002.
